Today, somehow my Dell got cranky. I’m using Dell Inspiron 9400. On right side of the keyboard, can feel overwhelming warm. Also, the CPU processing % got stucked at 100%. I know on the right side of keyboard is the GPU card, which currently powered by Nvidia GeForce 7800, driving my Windows XP.
Why the GPU overheat?
In my case, it is not the graphic driver problem. I’m really sure cos I’m using the Dell’s original driver.

So, I head to the net, looking for Fan Speed reader. I found this software; I8kfanGUI (Provided by; http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/). The reading of my GPU Temperature is 80C! Almost getting to boiling temperature. See at the “State of second fan”, came out around 1900RPM+ only. Static value. Not bouncing like “State of first fan” which on the left side, the processor side.
While leave the PC running, the program I8kfanGUI running, I tilt my laptop, and using torch light, I can see the fan on right side is not running at all.
What did I do is; I get a small paper, and poke poke the fan, and the fan start spinning. Phew!
I think, the best permanent solution is, call Dell and get a replacement fan.
